Hello,
I saw a tweet about the show - Firefly Lane on Netflix so I decided to check it out because I was looking for something new to watch. While watching Firefly Lane, I realised the show was based on a book written by Kristin Hannah.
Since then, I’ve read two books by Kristin Hannah - The Four Winds and True Colours and I loved both. Kristin Hannah writes stories with strong female characters and I love how she depicts female relationships in her books.
If you like historical fiction, I would recommend The Four Winds which is set during one of the worst environmental disasters in Texas - the dust bowl period. It’s a story about a woman who finds her way through very challenging circumstances.
True Colours is more contemporary and is a story about three sisters and a crime that threatens to tear them apart.
What’s New on the Podcast
This year, I made a decision to work in seasons on my podcast so I could have breaks. During my time off, I noticed a spike in my podcast downloads and wondered what could have caused this. I discovered that the podcast was featured on a couple of Apple Podcast charts including in the business and careers category in Nigeria, Ghana and a few other African countries. It reached the #1 spot in the careers category in Nigeria.
As an independent podcaster with a full-time job and a two-year-old daughter, I’ve struggled to find time to produce this podcast but this feature gave me a lot of motivation to keep working on the show.
A new podcast season started on Tuesday and the first episode was with Tolu Oyegbesan who creates content on personal finance and careers. We talked about her content creation journey and some mistakes she made in the early part of her career.
A line from Tolu that really resonated with me was when she spoke about being afraid before starting Your Finance Guru: “I always tell people like I was so scared. I was like, oh my God, what if I start and people are insulting me, like what does she know, what is she saying? How many years of experience does she have? Who is she? I was so nervous about what people would say, but I was just like, I can't live my life being scared.”
What I’ve listened to recently
My mum’s been staying with me for the past week and she gets my daughter ready in the morning. While dressing my daughter, she asked why I apply sunscreen on her and why she felt it was unnecessary for dark skin. This made me think about why I wear sunscreen every day and some of the skin care decisions I’ve made in the last year.
I don’t think skin care should be complex, so I love this Life Kit episode on how to build a simple skin care routine.
I’ve also been listening to The Retrievals which is a five-part series on the experience of dozens of women who went for fertility treatment at a Yale clinic. The women felt they weren’t getting adequate pain relief but didn’t know why. They later discovered that a nurse stole their pain medication (fentanyl) and replaced it with saline. The Retrievals explores how women’s pain is often disregarded in medical settings and why the nurse stole fentanyl from patients.
Thank you for reading. Have you enjoyed reading, watching or listening to anything interesting lately? I would love to hear about it!
Take care,
