Breaking into the media industry, Unprisoned and can reading reduce our stress levels
Sometimes, it feels like the media industry is changing and there’s a lot of free content online so how do media companies survive? What is it like to work in the media industry now? These are some of the questions that inspired this week’s episode where I spoke with Pilar Nalwimba. Pilar is a freelance podcast producer and she shared how she transitioned from working in social media to producing shows for clients such as the BBC and Bumble.
What I’ve Watched/Read/Listened to Lately…
I just watched Unprisoned on Disney+. It’s a show about a lady whose father has just been released from prison after being away for 17 years. The series explores building a relationship with a parent you haven’t seen for many years and what it’s like to build a life after being in prison.
I’ve been reading Small by Small by Ike Anya. It’s a memoir written by a Nigerian doctor about his medical school years in Nigeria in the 90s. His experience at medical school is shaped by the Nigerian political climate at the time so I’ve learnt a few things about Nigerian history.
I enjoyed listening to this episode on Just One Thing - with Michael Mosley on how reading for pleasure can help reduce stress and boost our brains. Apparently, reading can help us live longer too.
Do you know someone who has never listened to a podcast? April is Adopt-A-Podcast-Listener month, organised by Tink Media. This is a month to share podcast recommendations to help non-listeners discover shows that they may like. For the podcast industry to grow, more people need to become podcast listeners. My husband never used to listen to podcasts and I recommended some to him, now we listen to podcasts together and talk about them. So, you may just influence someone you love to start listening to podcasts.
