What to watch when there's so much on
The Gilded Age, mum podcasts and a historical fiction recommendation
📺 Lately, I’ve been struggling with finding what to watch on TV. I start a film, watch it for 20 minutes and then move to a TV show where I watch one episode, and I don’t return to any of them for a few days or sometimes, weeks.
But one show held my attention, and that was The Gilded Age. If you’re unfamiliar with The Gilded Age, I’ll simplify by saying it’s a series set in New York that explores themes around the relationships between old money and new money families and some of the issues in the Gilded Age period (around the late 1800s).
If you like Bridgerton, I think you would like The Gilded Age.
🎙 I’ve been on a break from my podcast, but I’m figuring out how to return back to podcasting in a sustainable way. I was a guest on another podcast - How Does That Sound, where I spoke about producing an independent podcast. I shared a clip from the episode on my podcast feed.
📚 I just finished The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore, which is historical fiction. It’s the story of an LA socialite who’s diagnosed with leprosy (Hansen’s disease) in the 1920s and is exiled to a hospital in rural Louisana. The book explores what it was like to live with the disease through this time period and how Mirielle navigated the changes in her life. The story made me appreciate the advances in modern medicine, as there was a lot of stigma attached to leprosy during this time.
🎧 I’ve recently started listening to the podcast - Mummy Mayhem, hosted by Feyi Bello and Nicole Chikwe. As a mum to a three-year-old, I sometimes want to hear other mums' experiences, particularly from Nigerian mums, and this has been fun to listen to.
Take care,
